Rumsfeld visits the Troops by MauserGirl Rumsfeld visits the Troops by MauserGirl
I got the idea for this piece while I was watching CNN last night. They had a report on about Donald Rumsfeld's suprise holiday visit to the troops in Iraq. So I thought, "If Donald Rumsfeld, being the Secretary of Defense, asked the troops what they'd like for Christmas, what would they say?" So here it is.

Happy Holidays! ^^

Huh, I didn't see this one. 3 days before you posted it, our chow hall was attacked. The funny thing is, Rumsfield actually visited the airfield next to us, regarding the attack, but never came to ours. We only found out about his visit through CNN on AFN...

there's something incredibly sinister about this picture :) Rumsfield's somewhat evil expression (okay, so that's the only one he ever wears) and the fact the solider looks about eight years old, his incredibly cute expression... the best part is that he wishes for world peace last of all :D

I love the idea behind this, excellent work.

This tickled my funny bone. Many of My father's friends in Iraq could sympathize with this. Good job. (P.S.- Every x-mas my Mom complains nobody gets her the one thing she asks for every year- world peace.)

By the way, tell your mom she's asking the wrong people for World Peace. My fiance keeps asking the folks at the Burger King drive through for it. "Can I get you anything else?" "World Peace!" "..." They're usually pretty stunned. One time a girl said, without skipping a beat, "Sorry, we don't have that on the menu." Hehe.

GAHA! Eheh..hehehe.... heh. I'm still reeling. I happened to be browsing the Iraq War 2003 section out of boredom and curiosity and I found this funny little cartoon under Recent Deviations. I thought to myself, "Hah! This is great! The dialogue and caption are witty and the drawing is excellent, too... those expressions are perfect." So, I scroll on down the page perusing the comments, looking for the controversy that might arise from such a comic. Lo and behold, I see my new friend Leni commenting. "Wait," I think. "She's not commenting... she is accepting praise for this excellent cartoon! EGADS! SHE DREW IT!!"

And so I find myself here purely out of coincidence. It has been a strange week.

In any case, the thoughts about the cartoon expressed above still hold true. The only criticisms that I can identify is the sense that Rumsfeld is about to slide out of his chair and the soldier is about to slide off of Rumsfeld's leg. Of course, I can't imagine that Rumsfeld would be very comfortable to sit on, so that part's probably accurate. ;)

^^ How about that? It's a small world after all, and I'm everywhere. Kind of like the CIA. Just kidding, of course. I'm glad you liked it, and maybe I'll post more of my comic work. I draw a comic strip for the papers, y'know. ^^

I really dig this piece... you made it seem so much like a real Santa scene, with Rummy Claus all too desperate to listen to the next kid in line and so on, and with the soldier looking so young.

Also, the comments from the "satellite phone", onwards, really made it much more personable than just the armor requests, as that's probably what a lot of soldiers are wanting to have for Christmas... not the Secretary of Defense... but their family.

^^ Thank you for the comment and, even more so, for the :+fav:. I'm happy you enjoyed this. Do you think if I did some other "Christmas in Baghdad" sort of drawings, people might enjoy them? I was thinking about doing one with the soldiers setting up a Christmas tree (or maybe a Xmas palm tree?).

I think the Xmas palm would be a great idea! And you could have one up at the top saying "but where do we put the star?!?" ^^

That's a really good idea. ^^

The neatest Xmas tree I've seen was in Kuwait - they used a camouflage net over a triangle shape they built out of 2x4s and then hung homemade ornaments on it. ^^ Lack of trees...
